Last
season Chester used different 41 players in the Nationwide
Conference under four different managers (Gordon Hill,
Steve Mungall, Owen Brown and Mark Wright). This is
the highest total since the 1929/30 season when Chester
used 42 players in the Cheshire County League. An additional
six players Michael Bertocchi, Lee Potter, Ben Chamberlain,
Carl Rodgers, Paul Berry and Lee Sefton only featured
in the Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Congleton Town.
The only player to feature in every
Conference game was Wayne Brown (pictured)
who also played in every cup tie with the exception of
the aforementioned Congleton match. Of the outfield players
only three started more than thirty league games, Martyn
Lancaster (35), Mark Beesley (34+1) and Michael Rose
(33), while 23 players started less than 10 games. The
honour for shortest appearance in a Chester shirt went
to Alex Higgins who only played in the last 21 minutes
of the 1-0 defeat at Dover Athletic. Carlos Lopez meanwhile
played for 50 minutes, as a substitute against Scarborough
and Stevenage, during which time he endeavoured to pick
up one yellow card.
Twelve of last seasons players are
still at the club and have been allocated squad numbers:
Wayne Brown, Carl Ruffer, Chris Blackburn, Lee Woodyatt,
Martyn Lancaster, Mark Beesley, Jimmy Haarhoff, Paul
Carden, Danny Collins, Phil Bolland, Stuart Whittaker
and Shaun Carey. In addition Iain Jenkins, Chris Hopwood,
Chris O’Brien (currently on loan at Droylsden)
and Carl Rodgers are also still at the Deva.
