LATE GOAL DENIESS VICTORY
Chester twice led at Chorley last night only to be denied three points from the Magpies. After a bright start Adam Thomas gave Chester a deserved lead on 16 minutes, the winger heading home from a Lewis Coulton cross. The Blues maintained their lead until half-time but were pegged back six minutes into the second period with Connor Hall lofting the ball over Harry Tyrer in the Chester goal.

Darren Stephenson restored the lead on 76 minutes shooting home past Chorley ‘keeper Matt Urwin from 25 yards out. The Blues looked to be heading for three welcome points on the road, but with just three minutes remaining Magpies substitute Jack Sampson headed home at the far post to level the scores.

BLUES DRAW A BLANK
In a game lacking in any real quality Buxton and Chester fought out a 0-0 draw at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium on Saturday to extend Chester’s unbeaten run to five matches. The Blues almost snatched all three points in the dying seconds as Kurt Willoughby met a Lewis Coulton cross only to see his goal bound effort saved by Theo Richardson in the home goal.

HOME TIE FOR BLUES
Chester’s reward for Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Pontefract Collieries is another home tie in the Third Round Qualifying against Northern Premier League Division One West side Hanley Town, scheduled for Saturday 1 October. Prize money for the match is £5,625 to the winners, £1,875 to the losers.

It took two second half goals from Kurt Willoughby to book Chester’s passage into the next round. After a poor opening 45 minutes, in which Chester had Harry Tyrer to thank for a smart save to keep Joe Lumsden’s header out and the scores level, the introduction of Darren Stephenson on 53 minutes seemed to give the Blues more urgency. Ten minutes later Willoughby turned the ball home from close range following a cross from Ollie Heywood to break the deadlock.

The game was wrapped up on 76 minutes at Willoughby whipped home a quick free-kick as Colls awaited the referee’s whistle! The victory brings with it £3,375 in prize money.

YOUTH CUP VICTORY
The Chester youth team have beaten Vauxhall Motors 4-1 on penalties to progress from their FA Youth Cup First Round Qualifying tie after the game had ended 2-2 on 90 minutes. Chester had taken a two goal lead through Paige Wilding and Louie Westhead in the opening 16 minutes and held that lead until half-time. Two goals in the opening ten minutes of the second period though saw Motors draw level and neither side could find a winner in regulation time. The attendance was 215.

The young Blues will now face Altrincham at home in the Second Round Qualifying with the tie taking place in the week commencing 26 September.

MATCH POSTPONED
Following the announcement yesterday of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, tomorrow’s league game at Spennymoor Town, along with the rest of the football calendar has been postponed as a mark of respect. The home game against Southport next Tuesday is expected to go ahead as usual.

The National League have issued the following statement...

Firstly, the National League sends sincere condolences of all Member Clubs on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to His Majesty King Charles III and the further Royal Family.

Further to this morning’s statement by Debbie Hewitt, chair of The Football Association, all National League System, FA Trophy, and grassroots fixtures scheduled for this weekend will not take place as a mark of respect. The Queen was the FA’s patron, and Prince William is its President.

At this moment National League fixtures will go ahead as planned from Monday 12 September onwards although we understand no sporting event of any kind will be permitted on the day of The Queen’s funeral.

The decision to postpone this weekend’s fixtures is taken in line with guidance from the FA in consultation with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The League fully supports this stance.

FANS TREATED TO A CLASSIC
Those supporters who attended Deva Stadium on Saturday were treated to a classic game of two halves as the Blues, 0-3 down at half-time, fought back magnificently to earn a share of the points against league leaders King’s Lynn Town.

The opening half belonged to the Linnets who opened the scoring as early as the third minute as Jordan Ponticelli was fouled inside the penalty area, Gold Omotayo converting the resulting spot-kick. Worse was to come a minute later as Theo Widdrington’s long range shot from the half-way line sailed over Harry Tyrer into the net. Ponticelli added a third just before half-time with a flick over Tyrer from close range.

Manager Calum McIntyre made changes to the formation at the break and brought on Kieran Coates for Darren Stephenson. Two minutes after the re-start Chester pulled a goal back through Iwan Murray after a quick counter attack involving Kurt Willoughby and Kole Hall set up the midfielder to beat Linnetts ‘keeper Jones from close range.

On 78 minutes a smart turn and volley from Danny Devine opened his Blues account and set up a grandstand finish. With four minutes remaining the comeback was complete as Ollie Heywood’s free-kick from the right to the far post found Hall who squared for Willoughby to score from close range to send the crowd wild.
