CITY DUMPED OUT THE THE FA TROPHY
Chester
were knocked out of the FA Trophy on Saturday as
Clitheroe, from two divisions below, ran out 1-0
winners to book a home tie with York City in the
next round. The Blues’ first half performance
was the worst seen for a long time and described
by manager Calum McIntyre as “an absolute
disgraceful”.
The Blues were without Dylan Mottley-Henry and Iwan
Murray through injury but still fielder a strong
starting X1. The visitors took the lead on 15 minutes
with Harry Scarborough prodding home a loose ball
from close range. All Chester had to show for their
first half efforts was a Connor Woods header that
flew just wide.
Half-time saw four substitutes made as on came Lewis
Leigh, Kevin Roberts, Fin Roberts and Tom Peers
at the expense of Declan Weeks, Offrande Zanzala,
Connor Woods and Tom Leak in an effort o freshen
things up.
Chester did show improvements but still failed to
create any real clear cut chances, in fact they
had goalkeeper George Murray-Jones to thank for
pulling off a great save to deny Luke Gill a second
goal for Clitheroe.

TEN MAN CHESTER BATTLE FOR POINT
For the second game in a
week Chester found themselves having to play with
ten men, Nathan Woodthorpe was the culprit this
time having been given a straight red card seconds
before half time following a foul on Jordan Keane.
Five minutes before Chester had taken the lead,
a cross into the box looked to have been claimed
by goalkeeper Chris Renshaw, but in the driving
rain he inexplicably dropped the ball at the feet
of Offrande Zanzala who tapped it home from six
yards out.
Eight minutes into the second period Southport made
the extra man count as Sonny Hilton equalised. The
Sandgrounders began to apply the pressure forcing
George Murray-Jones into some smart saves as Chester
struggled to get a foothold.
Against the run of play however the Blues regained
the lead seven minutes from time as two substitutes
Fin Shrimpton and Connor Woods combined for the
latter to score.
Three minutes into stoppage time the Sandgrounders
drew level for a second time as Adrien Thibaut found
the net from close range to deny Chester all three
points.

BAINBRIDGE AT THE DOUBLE Two
goals by Jack Bainbridge gave Chester a much needed
2-1 victory at Buxton on Saturday. The midfielder
gave the Blues a 21st minute lead scoring from close
range following a Iwan Murray cross.
The Bucks drew level on the stroke of half-time
as Tai Sodje scored from the edge of the six yard
box. The best goal was saved for last as Bainbridge
met a right wing cross to send a looping header
from some distance past Joe Young in the home goal
on 67 minutes.
Chester will be looking for back-to-back wins when
they travel the short distance to play Southport
on Tuesday night, kick-off 19.45hrs.

JONES TO THE RESCUE AFTER PEERS SEES RED
A
goal six minutes into stoppage time from defender
James Jones rescued a point for the Blues as they
drew 1-1 with Marine last night. Manager Calm McIntyre
made changes following Saturday’s cup exit,
in came defender Jack Shorrock and there was a return
to James Jones to the starting line up.
After a fairly scrappy first half the visitors took
the lead in first half stoppage time (added as a
result of a broken corner flag!) as substitute George
Newell scored with his first tough via a deflection.
With just seconds left Tom Peers was given his marching
orders after receiving a second yellow card from
referee Jonathan Maskre, who adjudged that the striker
had dived in the penalty area.
The Blues improved after the break with the introduction
of Iwan Murray and Connor Woods, at the expense
of Lewis Leigh and Offrande Zanzala.
The game seemed to be drifting to a defeat until
Declan Weeks launched one last ball into the box
from the right and Jones rose to head home past
Fraser Barnsley in the Mariners goal.
Chester are next in action on Saturday when they
visit Buxton, kick-off 15.00hrs.

CHESTER EXIT FA CUP Three
goals in the first half brought Chester’s
FA Cup run to a swift end at League One side Cambridge
United on Saturday. The Blues created very little
in a disappointing opening half, that saw Dylan
Mottley-Henry hobble off injured after just 20 minutes.
Kylian Kouassi gave the U’s the lead on ten
minutes bundling home at the far post following
a free kick.
Fifteen minutes later Kouassi added a second goal
as the home side took complete control of proceedings.
As the game entered first half stoppage time James
Brophy curled in a third goal to seal the tie.
Chester, backed by 1,231 supporter’s had little
to cheer in the second half, Pat Jones and Jack
Bainbridge forcing saves from Jake Eastwood in the
home goal the only highlight’s.
